The Challenges of Caring for Elders
Your residents want to age in place and be independent but that creates a unique set of challenges that can impact your ability to provide for their their safety and well-being. Here are some of the challenges:
1. Physical Health and Safety:
Increased Risk of Falls: As mobility and balance decline, falls increase. How can CCRCs prevent falls and when they happen, get residents the help they need as quickly as possible?
Managing Chronic Conditions: Aging often involves managing multiple health conditions that may require the assistance of a care giver to manage. How do you help residents manage their meds without having to send someone to do this in person?
2. Mental and Emotional Well-being:
Social Isolation and Loneliness: This is a significant concern for seniors living alone. Many of the elders under your care need constant reminders. Having an in-room reminder system can significantly increase engagement. Residents will also benefit from engagement in their units.
Cognitive Decline: Memory lapses, confusion, or the early signs of dementia are common. How can these be addressed in the residents’ units?
3. Staffing:
Staffing Burden: Hiring a home care service is many times beyond the ability of residents. Even those who could afford it may need assistance when the caregiver is not present.
Coordination of Care: Managing multiple healthcare providers, appointments, and services can be overwhelming for seniors and CCRCs mostly avoid engaging with residents on this to avoid liability.
